Nigeria Baptist Convention is one of the mainline churches in Nigeria. It has its branches all over the country even in the most remote village. There is no state in the country even in which we do not have over twenty churches even in Zamfara state. In Osun State alone we have over 400 churches and over eight thousand branches in the 36 states and Abuja. Baptist Churches are community based and she has impacted positively in the life of Nigerians since her inception in the 18th Century, in the area of health, education and community development. Nigeria Baptist Also has her mission field in Burkina Faso, Cote D’evoire, Sierra Leone, Mali, and Benin Republic. Nigerian Baptist Convention has one tertiary health facility (in the process of becoming fully operational), Bowen University Teaching Hospital, Three Major Secondary health Facilities Baptist Medical Centers in Ogbomoso, Saki and Eku, Twenty Smaller Hospitals and Many primary health centers. Apart from these there are several clinics and primary health centers attached to Local Association of Churches and Some local Churches all over the country. Nigeria Baptist Convention apart from Church Worship Services has various forums, programme and organizations for various age groups who engage in periodic camping, retreat workshops, congress and conferences that present ready platform for HIV/AIDS awareness and advocacy. Our Women Organization is very strong and they are community based. Baptist AIDS Awareness and Prevention Programme (BAAPP) is one of her human development program established to contribute towards stemming the spread and mitigating the impact of HIV/AIDS in Nigeria and beyond. It is targeted towards the combat of the pandemic of HIV/AIDS through awareness, advocacy, capacity building, prevention and impact mitigation. The Baptist AIDS Awareness and Prevention Programme is a faith-based, non-governmental initiative of the Nigerian Baptist Convention (NBC). Vision:
Mission Statement
Objective To create awareness, mobilize, enlighten, sensitize and educate the entire Baptist Family in Nigeria and on our Mission Fields to proactively respond with Christian love, care and compassion to the pandemic of HIV/AIDS in order to complement global effort to put at bay the deadly pandemic. To educate and empower the ministers, religious leaders and church workers at all level to be able to intelligently involve in the combat against the menace of HIV/AIDS. To utilize part of the time in our various forum, retreat, camping and seminars for sensitization, awareness and enlistment of more volunteers and workers in the control, prevention and impact mitigation of HIV/AIDS. To use Information, Communication and Education (ICE) materials and Behavioral Communication Change Materials (BCC) to create an enabling environment for PLWHA, PABA and OVC to be free from stigmatization, discrimination, ostracization or excommunication that often associate with the issue of HIV/AIDS within the Christian community where enlightenment is scanty or non-existent. To pioneer the Sensitization, enlightenment and create demand for VCT among MARPS in those remote areas of our Convention where awareness is rather scanty or even non-existent. To put in place a sustainable program of Life Skill and Peer Education for our children, students and youth in our churches and schools towards achieving the goal of HIV free generation. To create demands for HCT among our populace until our entire Baptist family and everybody in the sphere of our influence undergo HCT. To strategically site recreation centers, parks and other facilities all over our Convention territories where our youth can engage in activities that will enhance their health and encourage and strengthen positive Characters. To put in place a sustainable program of impact mitigation; such as poverty alleviation scheme, economic empowering skill acquisition for MARPs and other vulnerable people in our sphere of influence so that they can engage themselves in decent economic activities. To network with national and international agencies, governmental and non-governmental organizations, sectarian and non-sectarian whose positions and practices are not in conflict with our Christian philosophy for concerted effort in the fight against HIV/AIDS pandemic and realization of our goals. To cooperate with other agencies of our Convention that engage in social activities for concerted effort towards eradication of factors that aggravate HIV/AIDS such as turbulence in the family, gender discrimination, gender violence, communal conflict and wars, political upheaval, poor accommodation and environmental degradation etc. Maximizing the mission opportunities in our entire programme or invited programme to give opportunity to participant to know Christ or rededicate their lives to Him and his service. Operational Mode Embarking upon intensive awareness, sensitization and educational campaign in our secondary schools, local churches, local Associations, State Conferences, National Conferences and International Mission Fields. Printing and Intensive Circulation of Information, Communication and Educational (ICE) materials and Behavioral Change Communication Materials such as comics, books and magazines. Our IEC materials are acclaimed to be one of the best in the country. Publication of Instructional Manuals for various aspect of HIV/AIDS response includes: Care and Support of PLWHA, PABA and OVC through various impact mitigation programs, in collaboration with our Social Ministry Division and our Baptist Health Facilities across the country. Special attention for MARPs such as Sex workers, garage boys and girls, street hawkers bar, tenders; through our outreaches to Frontier States and rural Communities where the activities of the immigrant farm workers are rampant. Creating demand for VCT and carrying out of routine VCT in all our health facilities, periodic VCT in all our Churches, Local Associations, State Conferences and National Convention. Programme of Lifeskill and Peer Education in all our primary schools Secondary Schools, Vocational Schools and Tetiary Institutions. Nigeria Baptist Convention has one Tetiary institution, and more than 4,000 primary and secondary schools under their direct proprietorship or under their sphere of influence. Training of Trainers Workshop for our ministers and Church workers to able to carry on HIV/AIDS response in our Localities. Involvement of Students of Tetiary institution in HIV/AIDS response using Our Baptist Student Fellowship as a means by which other students can be reached, discouraging risky behaviors among the students of the tertiary institutions, by way of advocacy, awareness and sensitization campaign using religious fora. Organizing rallies, Lectures, Country race, essay competition quiz competition, and other activities to mark special days in HIV response i.e. World AIDS day. Organizational Structure Nigerian Baptist Convention Medical Board of the Nigerian Baptist Convention Medical Ministry Department of the Nigerian Baptist Convention Baptist AIDS Awareness and Prevention Programme BAAPP in the 27 Conference Areas throughout the Nation. Inter – Ministry Cooperation, Global Mission, Women Missionary Union Inter-departmental cooperation, Publications, Missionary Organizations and Christian Education Conference offices in all the twenty seven Conference Areas with the Project Manager at the elm of Affairs working with the Conference Committee including medical consultants. |
